Mission: Lacuna
Location: Engineering Section - Cold Station Theta
Timeline: Post Explosion, during repair scheduling.

=/\= Primary Engineering Section, Cold Station Theta =/\=

Manic... Hectic... Busy...

The Engineering section of the station was a hive of activity and the smell of plasma smoke still lingered in the air as the environmental systems struggled to scrub it completely from the air, it was far from the thick, acrid smoke that threatened them during the recent incident but it was still enough for anyone to get a minor headache if they didn't take a few draws from the oxygen masks that were being kept on hand until things could be restored to normal.

In the midst of the chaos, a tall Andorian stood in his black undershirt, his rank pips and commbadge were pinned to it and his jacket had long been discarded to a broken console nearby, power was still fluctuation and command controls were still offline to his section, everything at the moment was running through a linked console on the bridge and bought down to an oversized PADD he had in one hand. He'd also forgone his usual covering to his cybernetic left arm and it gleamed in the half-light provided by the emergency lighting in the section.

Alessia wandered onto the Engineering section and was hit with the strong smell of plasma smoke. She stumbled back, looking around for someone to ask for help. But everybody seemed busy. In the midst of it all she saw the tall Andorian standing in the middle. The commander rank pips made it quite clear who he was, the man she was supposed to report to. But better safe than sorry, she should ask. She took one deep breath and wandered over to him.

“Sir? I’m sorry, I am looking for Commander, uh, Commander th'Zarath? I am supposed to report to him.”

Seeing her take the chance to approach without a mask indicated to Thelin that the young woman was either new or not an Engineer, he had been expecting a new recruit to turn up and took pity on her as she stopped to report in to her, he reached over to the nearest console and retrieved one of the un-used masks before handing it to her, "Put it on, Lieutenant, it'll help with with smoke." the Commander replied with a slight smile before giving her a bow of his head, "I'm Commander th'Zarath, Chief Engineer for my sins," he continued as his antennae reached out and twisted towards her, "How can I help you, Lieutenant?"

She put on the mask quickly, taking a breath of the sweet sweet fresh oxygen. Then she looked back up at the Andorian. “I was transferred here from the USS Saratova Sir, and my shift just started I believe, but I uh, I don’t exactly know where to begin.” She smiled slightly sheepishly. It was indeed like a beehive in this section. Engineers where going back and forth doing… things. The light smoke was obscuring enough of her vision that she couldn’t make out the details.

"Well, I'd say that your first step was the right one, if in doubt it's always best to ask someone with more pips on their collar than you," the Andorian replied with a light chuckle as he took a PADD from a passing officer, reviewed it and handed it back in a few smooth motions, "As you can see, we're all working repair duty at the moment, we had an explosion in one of the older sections of the station and while things are secured, there is a lot of work to get done in getting everything back up to spec." it was an old trick that many Engineers had, the ability to make devices of all kinds appear almost at will, his hands barely moved and yet the Andorian was holding another PADD and working through some details, "What was your specialty at the academy and which jobs were you assigned on the Saratova?"

“My specialty at the academy was Computer and Environmental Systems, and on the Saratova I used to keep the computer and environmental Systems up to date and running, and fixing them if there where any problems, Sir.” She rocked back and forth on her feet again. Nervous habit, she realized in the back of her mind.

"Excellent, then you're with me, Lieutenant," Thelin replied with a slight smile as he gestured towards the kit rack in the back of the room, "Grab a harness, toolkit and emergency gear and meet me here, Section Seventeen Alpha Nine," he replied as he handed the PADD over to the young Lieutenant, it now contained a map of the station and highlighted were the damaged sections and their repair schedule, "That section maintains computer control through from the primary core and both the secondary and tertiary backup control systems, we need to get in, repair the environmental systems and restore computer control." he thought for a moment before adding a few extra instructions, "Do not enter the section without me and while it's just us engineers here, I hate being called sir, call me Thelin or Chief it's your choice, just don't sir me to death," he added with a quick wink, the antennae now flattening out slightly against his head.

The woman nodded. “Okay si-uh, Chief.” She jogged over to the kit rack in the back. She knew how to operate them, of course. It had been a whole course in the Academy. But she never had to use it back on the Saratova. It must have been one hell of an explosion to mess up the environmental systems this bad, she realized. And that smoke! Taking another breath of her oxygen mask, she quickly put on the gear and took the toolkit. Wandering around, she miraculously made her way over to section Seventeen Alpha Nine without getting lost too bad.

After dealing with a few other issues in the main section, Thelin had made his way around to the section he'd marked out and wasn't surprised to see the young woman waiting for him, he'd read her file briefly and she showed a lot of promise, she'd also managed to find her way through the bowels of the station without assistance and that wasn't an easy task, let alone for someone new to the place, "Good, you're ready," the Andorian replied as he placed his right hand on her shoulder and turned her to face him, he checked the anchor points on her harness and smiled when he was satisfied, "Right, we go in slow, grav plating is off so we'll need to set secure anchor points at the entrance and every four metres, if you feel yourself getting out of control, kick your feet to the nearest bulkhead and activate your mag boots, got it?"

She nodded., smiling nervously. “Let’s hope I don’t accidentally break my neck or the whole station doing this.” She muttered under her breath, before looking at her commander, waiting for confirmation to go inside.

"Breaking your neck would be a tragedy I would hate to have to report to your mother and sister," the Andorian replied as he turned tapped a few commands into the PADD that appeared in his hand, activating the forcefield behind them to ensure the section remained secure, once he was certain they were ready he moved back to the door and activated it, revealing a soot-stained room, debris floated in place with the lack of gravity, wires and panels sparked with half-light and made patterns on opposing walls in stark contrast to the usual bright and airy look associated with Starfleet, "First anchor, half a metre inside the door, then you make your way over to the environmental control junction to the left, I'll work on isolating the power couplings, once they're down you can take off the bulkhead and begin work."

A small nod of her head, and Alessia went to work. First anchor, she placed it down and held onto it. She couldn’t possibly imagine what happened here that wasn't some kind of attack. She slowly made her way over to the junction. The smoke was thicker here, she was lucky that she hadn’t taken of her mask when she got in here. Breathing without it would be extremely annoying here.

After placing his anchor point and testing it with a quick pull, the Andorian made his way over to the bulkhead he needed, it only took Thelin's practiced hands a few moments to pull away the bulkhead cover and decouple the EPS control matrix, the sparks and random lighting stopped and the entire room was bathed in a dull red glow from stained emergency lighting, "Ok, go ahead and start, I'll get on to the computer controls," his voice was slightly muffled by the mask but he found himself watching her out of the corner of his eye, he placed down his next anchor point and tested it before swinging himself up and kicking himself off the wall gently, in an environment with no gravity this caused him to float forward with his next anchor point in hand, he placed it down and held himself firm to regain his positioning.

Alessia started trying to take off the bulkhead. It took her a few tries to get it off, but in the end she managed. She started working on the controls, checking her anchor every once in a while. The controls where slightly different then she was used too. It was only logical of course. There was obviously a difference between a small Defiant class ship and a station around twice as large as the one she grew up at for the first 5 years of her life. The red lighting made it slightly harder for her to see what she was doing, so she furiously hoped that she wasn’t messing up.

"How bad is it looking, Lieutenant?" Thelin asked through his mask as he removed another bulkhead, he reached down to the tool case that had been strapped to his belt, opened it up and took out a flashlight, it was swiftly attached to his wrist and he shone it inside, a small curse in Andorian passed his lips that wasn't picked up by the Universal Translator as he realised how much damage had actually been done by the fires.

“Pretty bad sir, half the computer looks fried. I can maybe get some of the systems to work, but I’ve never seen the inside of a bulkhead so fried as this one looks. How did this even happen?” She asked. Trying to tap on one of the control panels, she stuck her hand out, only to quickly retract it when she touched it. “Oh, and some of them are hot.” She added as an afterthought.

"We're still trying to work that out," Thelin replied with a slight smile as he began removing damaged components and making mental notes of which ones he would need to replace and the order he was taking them out, "Its not uncommon on older stations to see a number of incidents, sometimes those small incidents get bigger," he added quickly, "Repair what you can, replace what you can't, if something is hot, use the gloves in your kit, they've got thermal insulation,"

She started working again, fixing what she could and replacing other parts. After a while, she had managed to repair the gravity. “I’m going to turn on the gravity in a few seconds if that’s alright sir-uh-Chief!” She said, her hand hovering above the panel to turn it on.

"Go ahead," Thelin replied once he was sure he was facing the right way, he'd shifted his legs under him and felt like he was standing on the bulkhead below him, "I'm seeing a few things which might indicate this wasn't quite an incident with an older station, theres traces of... something." the Andorian mused out loud, his tricorder was giving him readings that were puzzling, he needed to run them through one of the science bods to be sure.

“Gravity on in 3, 2, 1, Gravity on!” True to her words, all the floating wires and debris fell down. With a yelp she covered her head. As soon as the things had dropped she looked back up, just talking in the words she had heard the Andorian murmur. “Chief? I’m sorry, what did you say?” She asked.

The sudden feel of the gravity was invigorating and the Andorian allowed himself another smile, "Just some anomalous readings, Lieutenant," he replied as he poked his head back inside the bulkhead, "See if you can get the air filtration and recycling online, it'd be helpful when the next teams get in here." he added as he began replacing items he had marked, parts that had been damaged in the fire were disabled and discarded on the floor next to his feet.

Alessia nodded and continued. It wasn’t that hard of a job per say- scratch that, It was pretty hard. After awhile she managed to get the recycling and air filtration back online. They weren’t at full function, but it was nice to see them working at least.

With a whine and a few lights flickering on and off the Computer control junction spluttered into life and illuminated the inside of the bulkhead, a satisfied Andorian pulled himself free and shoved a few damaged components out of the way with his foot as the rest of the environmental systems came back online, "Excellent work, Lieutenant Jasaiax, you're going to fit in well around here if you can get work like that done in short order." he shouted through the mask with a slight smile across his face, "We'll leave the rest for the clean-up and finishing crew, we have everything we needed to get online, even if its only partial."

Alessia nodded, and then she stood there, unsure what to do exactly. She grabbed her tools together in an attempt to look busy. But the truth was, she just didn’t know what to do.

"Well, get yourself packed up and then you have a report to write up, you'll need to describe the works you completed and the expected clean-up work required, but you can do that with the rest of your shift unless you're asked to assist elsewhere," Thelin replied with a nod, "For the moment we're not using main engineering to compile reports, it's best if you find somewhere comfortable and quiet to sit down, I normally choose one of the cafes on the promenade, I can grab a bite to eat, a drink and get my reports done then."

“Okay Chief, I’ll uh- I’ll keep that in mind.” She quickly grabbed her stuff together, and looked at the Andorian for confirmation that she was allowed to leave.

"You're free to go when you're ready, Lieutenant." the Andorian could sense her watching him as he turned to start packing up his tools, "I'll see you around." he added as he turned back to her and flashed her another smile through the mask.

Alessia packed her last stuff and then she quickly nodded to the Chief, and then she jogged out of the room. Making her way to the Promenade.
